Stem Cell Therapy

Is your stem cell therapy provided under the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine?

Yes. Our Plans for the Provision of Regenerative Medicine have been submitted to Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine and accepted (Plan Nos.: PB3250224 / PB3250226 / PB3250279 / PB3250305). Our stem cell therapy is classified as Class II regenerative medicine under the Act.

What is stem cell therapy?

It's a form of regenerative medicine. We take stem cells from your own fat tissue, grow them in our in-clinic lab to increase their numbers, and then return them to your body by IV drip, joint injection, or skin injection. The treatment uses your own cells with the aim of acting on the condition of your tissues. Collection needs only a small incision of about 2mm, with no hospital stay, so you can carry on with daily life throughout treatment.

What symptoms or conditions do you treat?

Our clinic offers stem cell treatment options tailored to the following four types of symptoms and treatment needs.
① Intra-articular Injection: For patients experiencing knee or hip pain, osteoarthritis of the knee, and related joint conditions.
② Intravenous Infusion: For patients experiencing pain in multiple areas or those who wish to receive systemic administration.
③ Intradermal Injection: For patients seeking to address age-related changes in the skin, such as wrinkles, dryness, and enlarged pores.
④ Scalp Injection: For patients seeking to address hair thinning or improve scalp conditions.
Even when the same type of stem cell treatment is used, the method of administration is selected according to the treatment objectives and individual symptoms. The most appropriate method of administration will be determined by a physician following a medical consultation.

Is it safe?

We've submitted Plans for the Provision of Regenerative Medicine to Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine, and these plans have been accepted (Filing Nos.: PB3250224 / PB3250226 / PB3250279 / PB3250305). This doesn't mean the government guarantees the treatment's effectiveness or safety, but it does show that we provide it in line with the procedures set out by law. Because the treatment uses your own cells, rejection is considered unlikely. We also culture cells in our in-clinic Cell Processing Center, so your cells never leave the clinic. That said, every medical procedure carries some risk. We'll explain the main risks and side effects below and at your first visit.

What does the treatment process look like?

There are six steps from your first visit to cell delivery.
① First visit & consultation | The clinic director examines you and explains whether you're a candidate for treatment.
② Tests | Blood tests and other tests are done as needed to decide the delivery method.
③ Fat collection | Under local anesthesia, a small incision of about 2mm is made in the lower abdomen to collect a small amount of fat (about 10–20 minutes).
④ Culture | Your cells are grown in our in-clinic lab over about one month.
⑤ Delivery | Cells are returned to your body by IV drip or injection. You can go home the same day (if there are no issues).
⑥ Follow-up | You'll visit regularly so we can check your progress.

Is there pain or downtime?

Only a very small amount of fat is collected under local anesthesia, so you can go home the same day (if there are no issues). The anesthesia keeps pain to a minimum during collection, but once it wears off, you may have pain, bruising, or swelling at the collection site for a few days.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the number of cells, the delivery method (IV drip, joint injection, or skin injection), and the number of sessions. At your first consultation (¥3,300), the clinic director will explain everything in detail and give you a quote based on what you'd like.

How long does treatment take?

It takes about one month from fat collection to cell delivery, including the culture period. When you notice changes varies from person to person — for some, it may take several weeks to a few months.

Can I receive treatment if I live overseas?

Yes. We welcome many patients from overseas, and we can support you in Chinese and English. We'll also let you know in advance how long you'll need to stay and how many visits are required.

How is stem cell therapy carried out at your clinic?

For our stem cell therapy, cells are cultured and checked for quality at our on-site Cell Processing Center (Facility No. FC3250058). We use low-oxygen culture conditions and perform quality checks at three stages: at collection, during culture, and on the final product. We also create and maintain manufacturing records for each patient. After reviewing how the cells are developing in culture, the clinic director recommends the timing and method of administration.

Will my stem cells be frozen ? Is that safe?

If you plan to have multiple sessions, we culture the cells needed for all of them at once and store the portions for later sessions in liquid nitrogen. Storage under proper conditions is considered to maintain the condition of the cells.

Can my own stem cells be used for facial injections as well as IV infusion?

Yes. Besides IV drip and joint injection, we also use your cultured stem cells for facial injections.

How is fat collected?

Under local anesthesia, a small amount of subcutaneous fat is collected through an incision of about 2mm in a discreet area such as the lower abdomen. It takes about 10–20 minutes, and you can go home right afterward (if there are no issues).

How can I tell whether stem cell therapy is right for me?

Your doctor will decide after reviewing your age, symptoms, medical history, and current treatments as a whole. Rather than deciding on your own, please start by talking with us at a first consultation.

In what cases is stem cell therapy not recommended?

First, the clinic director will examine you in person at your first consultation (¥3,300) and review your age, symptoms, medical history, and current treatments before making a decision. You don't need to decide on treatment that day, and if we think an option other than regenerative medicine would suit you better, we'll tell you honestly. As a rule, we don't offer treatment if we determine that safety can't be adequately ensured given your overall health, or if you're currently being treated for or have a history of cancer.

Can I have stem cell therapy if I’m pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a serious underlying condition?

As safety during pregnancy has not been established, we do not offer this treatment to pregnant patients. If you are breastfeeding, we recommend waiting until after weaning. For patients with pre-existing medical conditions, our physician will assess eligibility individually during your consultation.

What tests are needed before stem cell therapy?

We mainly use blood tests to check your overall health and screen for infectious diseases. Imaging may be added if needed, and depending on your medical history, we may ask you to take additional tests.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. All visits are by appointment only. You can book online or call us at 03-6263-9219 (+81-3-6263-9219 from outside Japan). The initial consultation fee is ¥3,300 (tax included).

Can I receive treatment if I have an infectious disease such as hepatitis or HIV?

This depends on your test results. All patients receive a blood test for infectious diseases before treatment. Depending on the results, we may be unable to proceed, as your cells are cultured in our in-house laboratory and strict safety standards apply.

What are the main risks and side effects?

Pain, swelling, or bruising may occur at the fat collection or injection site. Other possible reactions include infection, inflammation, fever, fatigue, allergic-type reactions, and vasovagal reactions (lightheadedness or fainting). With IV infusion, vascular pain, fever, chills, or difficulty breathing may occur in rare cases. Because risks vary with your health and medical history, your physician will review them with you before treatment.

Can rejection happen even with my own cells?

Because the treatment uses your own cells, the risk of rejection is considered lower than with donor-derived cells. However, temporary reactions may still occur depending on your condition, so we monitor you after each treatment.

Do results vary from person to person? Is it possible to notice no effect?

Yes. Results vary with age, constitution, lifestyle, and other factors, and some patients may notice little or no change. Before treatment, your physician will explain both the expected outcomes and the limitations, and we proceed only once you fully understand and agree.

Why isn’t this treatment covered by insurance?

This treatment is not currently covered by Japan's National Health Insurance, so it is offered as self-pay (out-of-pocket) care. It is provided in accordance with Japan's Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine. Before treatment, your physician will fully explain the purpose, limitations, and total cost.

How does the treatment work, from collection to administration?

The details depend on your goals and condition. We collect a small amount of fat tissue under local anesthesia, then culture the stem cells in our in-clinic laboratory for about one month. The cells are administered by IV infusion, joint injection, or skin injection. A single collection yields enough cells to culture and store for multiple sessions, so no additional collection is needed if you choose more than one treatment. Your physician will recommend the cell count, number of sessions, and intervals at your consultation.

Can I store my stem cells for future use?

Yes. We can store your cultured stem cells at our clinic. Because the number and function of stem cells are thought to decline with age, some patients choose to collect and store their cells earlier. Your physician will discuss how many cells to store at your consultation.

Can stored cells be used for future treatment?

Yes. Your stored cells can be used for later sessions. They are cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Before each treatment, your physician checks the condition of the cells and discusses timing with you. If the cells are not in suitable condition, treatment may be postponed.

Is there an age limit? Can older people receive treatment?

Treatment is available to patients aged 18 and over. There is no upper age limit. Your physician will determine eligibility after reviewing your medical history and overall health. Whatever your age, please start with an initial consultation.

Can I bathe or exercise on the day of treatment?

On the day of fat collection, please keep the abdominal compression garment on for about 5 hours. After removing it, you may bathe as usual, following your physician's instructions. Please avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for the rest of the day.
